Student Excellence Program

STUDENT EXCELLENCE PROGRAM

At Mentone Park Primary School, we work collaboratively to achieve excellence and maintain high expectations for all students. We are committed to fostering intellectual, creative, physical, and social growth. Our teaching programs offer rich opportunities to extend student learning by developing both a broad and deep understanding of knowledge and skills. Within the classroom, we differentiate the curriculum to support each child in reaching their full potential. Additionally, highly able students are further challenged through targeted external extension programs such as those below:

Victorian High-Ability Program
The Victorian High-Ability program (VHAP) provides opportunities for students in Years 5 to 8 to participate in 10-week online enrichment programs, in English and Maths. The virtual program, delivered by Virtual School Victoria, focuses on tasks that stimulate students’ critical thinking, problem solving and creativity – enriching their understanding of English and Maths. The Department of Education centrally manages the selection process for the program based on student academic performance.

G.A.T.E.WAYS EUREKA PROGRAM
Since 1994, G.A.T.E.WAYS has offered high-ability and gifted children the opportunity to work with like-minded peers in topics that enrich and extend their regular curriculum. The programs are inquiry based, fast-paced, fun and challenging and are presented by experts in a range of disciplines. Most G.A.T.E.WAYS Eureka programs operate during regular school hours so that children are not penalised by having to complete their extension programs ‘on top of’ rather than ’instead of’ regular schoolwork. Eureka is a teacher nominated program – parents of nominated students will receive a letter from MPPS and use the links provided to enrol and pay online via the G.A.T.E.WAYS EUREKA portal.

The Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series
The Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series (VCES) provides funded extension activities for high-ability students in Victorian government schools from Prep to Year 12. Within the series, education expert partners are delivering a suite of face-to-face and virtual incursions and excursions.  Activities are delivered during school hours, after school, on weekends and during school holidays. All activities are free for participating students.  To view the schedule of activities on offer, visit VCES.
