Term 2- We are back!
After a well-earned rest for teachers, students and families, our school community is buzzing with energy as students settle back into learning and routines. It's wonderful to see so many bright faces through the gates again, and we are looking forward to a term packed with meaningful learning experiences. Over the next couple of weeks, we are looking forward to our annual Mother's Day breakfast, District Cross Country, City of Kingston Junior Mayor, our Prep, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3 and Grade 4 students will be heading out for swimming, and Walk Safely to School Day.
5/6 Camp Waratah Beach Camp
What a way to kick off the term 2! Our Grade 5/6 students headed off last week for a three-day camp at Waratah Beach Camp, and they had an absolutely wonderful time. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to build friendships, challenge themselves, and create lasting memories outside of the classroom. A huge thank you our staff and parent volunteers who attended to make the experience so special for our students.
ANZAC Day Commemoration
This year's ANZAC Day service at Mentone RSL was one our school community was warmly invited to join, and we were delighted to see families on the day. It was a wonderful turnout that speaks to the importance our community places on this commemoration. Students and families marched, and then at the service stood in quiet, genuine reflection. The atmosphere was one of respect and sincerity. It was a moving occasion, and we are grateful to every family who took the time to be part of it.
Principal's Reading Challenge
Our wonderful teachers launched the reading challenge this week and the excitement across the school has been fantastic to see. Designed to encourage a love of reading and build strong reading habits. The reading challenge will run throughout Term 2, with students working towards their reading goals and being celebrated at assembly as they reach each milestone. I love hearing each day from students about what they have been reading and how much they have accomplished. It is one of the highlights of my day!

Students have also received a Year 7 application form, with parents asked to complete all relevant sections and return the form no later than Friday 8th May.
Have a lovely weekend.
Leisa
Dear Parents, Guardians & Caregivers,
I hope you and your family all had a lovely Easter and that Term 2 has started smoothly for you!
Changes to the Daily Structure
Following feedback from students and staff last term, we have made a number of adjustments to better support student wellbeing, play, and readiness for learning. These changes were also shared with School Council earlier this week.
The key updates include:
Student feedback highlighted that a 20-minute Morning Break did not always provide enough time to both eat and engage in meaningful play following a two-hour learning block. By extending this break, we aim to give students greater opportunity to recharge and return to learning feeling refreshed and ready for Session 3.
Students also noted the short gap between eating at Morning Break and again before Lunch. In response, and based on staff feedback around smoother transitions into learning, Eating Time will now take place at the end of Lunch Break. This adjustment helps to better space eating opportunities across the day, while also supporting a calmer, more structured transition into the afternoon learning block.
While the Afternoon Break has been shortened to accommodate these changes, a 20-minute break will still provide students with time for a snack (if needed) and active play, supporting focus and engagement through the final session of the day.
A summary of our updated daily structure is outlined below:
Also, please note that during Weeks 3 and 4, the Specialist timetable will be modified to support the Prep–Year 4 Swimming Program. These changes ensure students continue to access all their Specialist subjects, while also maintaining valuable planning time for staff.
Yours sincerely,
Nathan Hutchins
Assistant Principal

In the Spotlight / Overview
We have had a wonderful start to Term 2 in Prep and it has been lovely to see everyone return refreshed and ready for learning. Students have settled back into routines quickly and are showing growing confidence and independence in the classroom.
Last week, we learnt about ANZAC Day through the story ANZAC Ted. To honour our ANZACs we made medals for our own teddies and brought them along to the ANZAC assembly. Well done to Sophie, who got up and spoke beautifully in front of the whole school. It was also wonderful to see Hugo K represent Mentone Park Primary School at the Mentone RSL parade.
It has been fantastic to see students reconnecting with friends and embracing the busy start to Term 2. We are looking forward to another exciting term of growth and learning together.
Reminders
Decodable Readers
We swap these on a Monday. They may sometimes bring home the same book twice. If your child forgets their books on Monday, they can swap on another day – we don’t want anyone going without!
Communication / Reading Diaries
Please ensure that you write the title of the reader in the diary each day AND ensure the diary is brought to school. Thank you to those who are doing this already.
Swimming Program at Mentone Aquatics
Our swimming program begins soon, and the students are very excited! Swimming is a wonderful opportunity to build confidence, water safety skills and independence.
Principal’s Reading Challenge
The Principal’s Reading Challenge has begun! Participation is optional, and students who are taking part have received their reading logs. We look forward to celebrating our readers as they work towards their milestones throughout the term.

Writing:
This fortnight, we have been settling back into writing routines and building confidence after the holidays. Students have been writing about their holiday experiences and learning how to share ideas in a clear sequence.
We have also begun revisiting grammar and punctuation, helping students remember how sentences work and what makes writing easy to read. Students are continuing to practise writing simple decodable sentences using the sounds and words they know.
InitiaLit:
In InitiaLit, we have continued building our early reading skills through learning new sounds, practising blending and reading decodable words.
During Weeks 1 and 2, students have revised familiar sounds and been introduced to new sounds including /i/, and /f/. We met our new friends ‘Iggy Insect’ and ‘Fifi Flamingo’. We made ‘Inky Insects’ with our thumb prints and wrote an interesting sentence about them.
Maths:
In Maths, we have begun our Counting Collections unit. Students are learning how to carefully count groups of objects while developing confidence with number recognition and quantity.
Through hands-on activities, students are practising organising objects into groups, counting with one-to-one correspondence and recording how many items they have counted. We have noticed it is much much easier to count our collections (accurately!) when they are properly organised, for example, using ten frames. We are encouraging students to explain their thinking and notice different ways collections can be organised and counted.
Humanities:
This fortnight, we have begun exploring our Geography unit by learning about Planet Earth and introducing the idea that we all belong to places.
Students are beginning to think about the world around them and are developing curiosity about different countries, cultures and environments. We will continue building this understanding as we explore different parts of the world throughout the term.

Welcome Back to Term 2 – Growing Gratitude and Connection
Welcome back to Term 2! We hope all our students and families had a restful and enjoyable break. As we begin a new term together, it’s a wonderful opportunity to reconnect, reset routines, and refocus on the values that help our children thrive—both in and out of the classroom.
This term, we continue to build on our wellbeing focus by exploring gratitude, one of the key pillars of The Resilience Project. Gratitude is all about noticing and appreciating the positive things in our lives—big or small. Research shows that practising gratitude regularly can improve mental health, strengthen relationships, and increase overall happiness.
How can we encourage gratitude at school and home?
By embedding these small, meaningful practices into everyday life, we help children develop resilience and a more positive outlook.
Introducing the Social Stencil Program (Grades 3–6)
We are also excited to introduce the Social Stencil Program for students in Grades 3–6 this term. This evidence-informed program is designed to support students’ social and emotional development through engaging, age-appropriate learning experiences.
The Social Stencil Program focuses on:
Through interactive lessons, discussions, and practical activities, students will learn how to navigate challenges, manage emotions, and build strong connections with others. The program aligns with our whole-school wellbeing approach and complements the strategies students are learning through The Resilience Project.
Working Together
Wellbeing is strongest when school and home work together. We encourage families to continue these conversations at home and support children in practising gratitude and positive social skills in their everyday lives.
We’re looking forward to a positive and productive Term 2, filled with growth, connection, and kindness.
Kind regards,
Zoe Guthrie
Mental Health & Wellbeing Leader

Our focus for the past two weeks has been on RESPECT as we used the pictures from the book ‘Gallipoli’ by Kerry Greenwood to spark discussion around soldiers and the meaning of the ANZAC’s. This inspired portraits of Australian soldiers, with the Years Prep to 2 creating torn paper collages and Years 3-6 experimenting with charcoal and pastels. It was a beautiful activity to complete in the lead up to ANZAC Day (lessons in week 1) and to reflect on afterwards (lessons in week 2).
Reminders
Sometimes things get a little messy in the art room and therefore everyone is encouraged to have an art smock. This could be a purchased one (eg. from somewhere like Officeworks) or an old shirt (adult sized are great for kids!). If these could please be labelled with name and grade, it would be greatly appreciated. There is a tub of spares always available in the art room, however please note that these are used by students across the entire school.
