Mentone Park Primary School acknowledges the Bunurong people of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Owners of the land on which we learn and play.
We value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and cultures’ and recognise their connection to lands, waters and communities.
We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.
What a wonderful couple of weeks it has been at Mentone Park Primary School!
It was an absolute delight to welcome so many grandparents and special friends to our school for Grandparents Day last Thursday. The joy on our students' faces as they showed off their work and spent time with their loved ones was heart-warming. Thank you to all the grandparents and special friends who took the time to visit us, including those who travelled far and wide, and celebrated this special day with our students.
Remembrance Day
On Remembrance Day on Tuesday, our Student Leaders, Mr Hutchins, and I had the honour of representing Mentone Park Primary School at the Mentone RSL Remembrance Day service. Despite the rain and cold conditions, it was a moving ceremony, and our students conducted themselves with great respect and maturity as our School Leaders laid a wreath on behalf of our school community.
While we were at the Mentone RSL, back at school our Grade 5/6 student leaders did an outstanding job leading our whole school Remembrance Day assembly. Their leadership and organisation made us incredibly proud. It is wonderful to see our students honouring those who served and sacrificed for our country with such thoughtfulness and respect. .jpeg)
Picnic Fundraiser
Our recent Picnic Fundraiser was a beautiful evening of community, care, and connection. It was wonderful to see so many families come together to support two very special families in our school community—Millie's family and Chase's family.
The night was filled with warmth and generosity, and we truly appreciate not only those who attended but also the families who couldn't be there in person but donated to support our families. It was a highlight of the evening to see Chase's nana win three of the raffle prizes, and it was lovely to see Chase and his siblings, along with Millie, draw the raffle prize names.
A huge thank you to all the families and staff who attended, and to those who generously donated prizes for our raffle. A very special thank you to Angie (Frankie's mum in Prep) for her incredible work organising the event and securing such a wonderful range of prizes to help with our fundraising efforts. I also want to acknowledge Louise, our Office Manager, for all the work she did behind the scenes to get this event up and running. Events like these remind us of the strong sense of community and compassion that makes MPPS so special.
The Colour Run Results are in!
What an outstanding effort from our school community! The Colour Run was a huge success, and I'm thrilled to share that we raised an amazing amount that will go directly towards purchasing brand new laptops for our students.
The energy and enthusiasm on the day was wonderful to see, but the fundraising efforts behind the scenes were outstanding— exceeding last year's record! A special thank you to Stacey (parent of Nia and Jonah) for her incredible work both behind the scenes and on the day to make this event such a success – we couldn't have done it without her!
I would like to make a few special mentions of some wonderful efforts by our students:
Thank you to everyone who participated, donated, and supported this fantastic initiative. Your contributions will make a real difference to our students' learning experiences.
Leisa
Dear Parents, Guardians & Caregivers,
I hope you are all well and your children enjoyed the SRC House Sports Day!
SRC House Sports Day
Last Friday, the 7th of November, we held our very first SRC House Sports Day - a fantastic new addition to our school calendar! This special event was created by our Student Representative Council (SRC) to celebrate inclusivity and promote our school values of TIER: Teamwork, Integrity, Excellence, and Respect.
Students embraced the day by wearing either their House colours or a favourite sporting jersey, adding plenty of colour and excitement to the school grounds. The day also carried an important purpose — raising funds to support cancer research, a cause close to many hearts within our community.
Between 11:30am and 1:30pm, students took part in a range of activities, including sports rotations, novelty races, and our ever-popular coin line challenge. Divided into eight mixed groups (two per House), students rotated through eight stations designed and led by our outstanding House and School Leaders. Teachers supervised and awarded House points to students who demonstrated our TIER values throughout the day.
The novelty races were a highlight — with sack races for Foundation to Year 2, egg-and-spoon races for Years 3–4, and a vortex throw for Years 5–6. There was plenty of cheering, laughter, and House pride on display! Our coin lines were equally impressive — Hinkler and Hawker Houses almost managed to stretch their lines right across both the netball and basketball courts!
A heartfelt thank you goes to all SRC and House Leaders for their creativity, planning, and leadership in running the day’s events. A special acknowledgement also to Ms. Maddie Oates (Year 5/6O Teacher and SRC Coordinator) for her dedication in guiding our student leaders and ensuring the day ran smoothly and safely. We’re already looking forward to holding this wonderful event again in 2026!
Parkdale Secondary College Lesson Observations
On Thursday, the 6th of November, we were delighted to welcome six visiting teachers from Parkdale Secondary College (PSC), who joined us to observe lessons across our Year 3–6 classrooms. PSC staff were inspired by our outstanding 2025 NAPLAN results and were eager to develop a collaborative partnership with MPPS — particularly given that many of our students transition to Parkdale Secondary each year.
I would like to sincerely thank Ms. Simone Bastin, Mrs. Mel Gibson, Mr. Nick Griffin, and Ms. Maddie Oates for so warmly welcoming our visitors into their classrooms. The PSC team (and I) were incredibly impressed by the high-quality teaching and exceptional student engagement observed in both literacy and numeracy sessions.
I also shared a copy of our new MPPS Instructional Model, and our guests commented several times on how clearly they could see its principles in action — a true testament to the professional learning and commitment of our staff.
This morning, our Year 3–6 teachers visited Parkdale Secondary College to observe lessons in junior English and Maths. I’m very much looking forward to hearing about their insights and what they’ve learned from this valuable exchange experience.
2026 Kinder-to-Foundation Transition Program
Last Wednesday, the 6th of November, we officially launched our 2026 Kinder-to-Foundation Transition Program. Designed and coordinated by Mrs. Janique Hankins (Foundation Teacher and F–2 Sub-School Leader), this program includes four weekly 45-minute sessions held on Wednesday mornings. These sessions aim to help our incoming Foundation students become familiar with our classrooms, routines, and specialist subjects before starting school next year.
So far, our future Foundation students have enjoyed a Library session with our wonderful volunteer librarian, Helen, and a creative Art session, where they decorated their very own personalised Library bags. These bags featured our MPPS logo, thanks to the amazing Stacey Kyriakou (mum to Jonah in FK and Nia in 1/2DS, PFA volunteer, and School Council parent representative).
The program will also include a Parent Information Evening on Thursday, the 4th of December, and a final “mini school day” session on Tuesday, the 9th of December, giving students a taste of what a real school day feels like.
The success of the first two sessions is a testament to the thoughtful planning of Mrs. Hankins, the support of Mrs. Zoe Guthrie (DI Coordinator), and the enthusiasm of our School Captains, who have been wonderful role models and helpers.
Yours sincerely,
Nathan Hutchins
Assistant Principal

In the Spotlight / Overview:
The last fortnight has been filled with many memorable moments, from celebrating our inquiry learning with visiting Grandparents/Special Friends, to getting active in multiage groups at the SRC Fun Sports Day. We’ve also acknowledged the significance of Remembrance Day, through reading in fluency pairs and our special assembly run by the House Leaders whilst our School Captains and SRC attended the Mentone RSL Ceremony.
Heads Up!
Congrats to the Leaders - The SRC Fun Sports Day was a huge success and it all stemmed from an idea at an SRC meeting. Our SRC leaders and class reps worked hard to flesh out ideas and then passed it onto our House Leaders to expand on them and execute them on the day. It was a wonderfully inclusive day, promoting and linking house points with our TIER values. Thank you to the Senior School Leaders: Matilda & James (SRC); Kenzie, Luna, Asha & Ben (School Captains); Zoe & Annabel (Hawker House); Bailey & Misha (Flynn House); Ash & Isla (Hinkler House) and River & Lennox (Kingsford Smith House).
Graduation Photos - Our Yr 6 Graduation photo is booked for Thursday 20th November. The photo will be taking place first thing in the morning so please ensure your child is prompt to school and wearing their 2025 Yr 6 Graduation garments (the t-shirt if you have misplaced the jumper).
Homework - Due to the short week 5 we had, the next fortnightly homework was handed out on Monday 10th of November. It is due Friday 21st November. A digital copy has been posted to Google Classroom and a hard copy given to those who have requested one. In preparation for Secondary School, please ensure all components of the homework are completed neatly and should there be any queries with a task, please ask prior to the due date.
Health - We have a student returned to school whose immune system is currently compromised due to medical treatment. We know our school community values care, compassion, and looking out for one another — and this is one of those moments where we can all make a difference. We kindly ask that you keep your child at home if they are unwell. If your child/ren are diagnosed with chickenpox or measles this must be reported to the general office as soon as possible.

It’s been another busy and creative time in the art room as students explored new skills and reflected on the significance of Remembrance Day through their artwork.
Grades 5/6 focused on clay modelling, learning important joining techniques to bring their creations together. They also commemorated Remembrance Day by designing thoughtful and expressive posters.
Grades 3/4 enjoyed reading the book We Remember and took inspiration from it to create posters and handmade poppies for our Remembrance Day display.
Grades 1/2 loved exploring the story Where the Forest Meets the Sea and created beautiful forest collage artworks inspired by the book. They also designed Remembrance Day posters and printed their own poppies.
Our Foundation students proudly painted their echidna clay models and learned simple printing techniques to create bright and meaningful poppy artworks for Remembrance Day..png)
In Auslan we have been learning signs for transport, countries and travel in preparation for the Deaflympics that begin in Tokyo on November 15.
Foundation students have practiced these signs through matching the names of countries to their flags, and watching an Auslan story about travelling on public transport.
Grade 1/2 students have practiced country and transport signs through matching the names of countries to their flags.
In Grade 3/4 and 5/6 the students have practiced country and transport signs through matching the names of countries to their flags and signing simple sentences to explain a place they went to and how they travelled there. E.g. I fly home. Weekend I go to shops.
PE Update: Touch Football Fun!
In Physical Education, all year levels have been getting active, learning new skills and working together through our Touch Football unit. We’re now three weeks in and it’s been fantastic to see so many students from Foundation right through to Year 6 showing teamwork, effort and great sportsmanship!
Foundation – Year 2
Our younger students have been learning the fundamental movement skills needed for touch football, including running into space, catching and passing, and working as a team to move the ball forward. They’ve also been exploring fair play, cooperation and communication.
Years 3 – 6
Students in Years 3–6 have been taking their skills to the next level, learning strategies like ‘taking the touch’, ‘dumping’ and how to use the offside rule to their advantage. They’ve also been reflecting on how tactics and teamwork can influence the outcome of a game.
We’ve been lucky to have some special guests from Synergise Health & Sport Development working with our senior students. Their expert coaching has helped refine skills, build confidence and encourage positive competition in a fun and inclusive way.
Across all levels, students are developing:
● Movement competence through skill practice, coordination and agility
● Personal and social skills by collaborating, encouraging others and following rules
● Understanding of health and wellbeing by staying active and recognising the importance of fair play
Looking Ahead
Next week, we’ll continue building on our skills with more mini-games and match play. It’s been wonderful to see so many students showing enthusiasm and persistence, keep it up, everyone!
Dear Mentone Park Families,
This fortnight, our wellbeing focus is on helping children develop confidence and self-belief. Confidence is the foundation of resilience, it helps children try new things, face challenges, and bounce back when things don’t go as planned. When students believe in themselves, they are more willing to take risks in their learning and show persistence in the face of setbacks.
Our recent Youth Resilience Survey results showed that many students across Years 3–6 rated lower in the areas of self-belief, problem-solving, and feeling good about themselves. At Mentone Park, we work hard to create an environment where students feel capable, supported, and proud of their efforts. Through daily encouragement, growth mindset language, and opportunities to share their successes, we remind our learners that confidence grows with practice and persistence.
This Fortnight’s Wellbeing at Home Activity: “Confidence Jar”
As a family, create a Confidence Jar to celebrate your child’s efforts and achievements.
What you’ll need:
How to do it:
You might also like to share your own moments, it shows children that everyone is learning and growing, no matter their age.
Why It Matters
At school, we intentionally design learning experiences that build confidence, through hands on tasks, peer collaboration, student leadership, and celebrating personal growth. When children see that effort and perseverance are valued as much as results, they begin to develop a strong sense of “I can do this.”
Children who feel confident in themselves are more likely to:
Together, at school and at home, we can help children see themselves as capable, resilient learners who are proud of who they are and what they can achieve.
Warm regards,
Pamela Kousis
Student Wellbeing Coordinator

Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t on our side, but that didn’t stop our amazing community from turning out in full force under the COLA for the MPPS Picnic Fundraiser!
The evening was filled with warmth, connection, and community spirit as we came together to celebrate our beautiful Millie (Grade 6) and to honour the memory of Amber, the incredibly brave mum of Chase (Grade 4).
The magician was truly unbelievable, delighting both children and adults with his tricks and talent. Families enjoyed their picnics, great company, and a fantastic raffle — all contributing to the success of the evening.
Thanks to your generosity, all profits raised will be shared between both families — a touching reminder of the compassion and unity that defines our Mentone Park community.
A huge thank you to everyone who attended, donated, volunteered, and helped make this special evening such a success.
